I'm an american living in den haag, i already have my USA drivers and motorcycle license and am currently going through the process of getting my dutch motorcycle license, but honestly its going far too slow (started in april, wont have the license until november (and thus winter)). Now, at the lessons im "renting" a bike from them to practice on, is it possible to rent (or even BUY) a motorcycle for a day at a time to practice on my own on the streets using my american license? I have my theory certificate, does that count as a permit to practice on my own (as in america)? The whole 1 hour a week for 35 euros is really inefficient. if i could get a bike for a whole day for 35 euros like i would a car, i'd rather that. anybody know about this? appreciate it, i'd just like to get out there before the summer passes me by. - Seth |

Hello Seth, I don't think it is advisable to drive a motor in Holland without a license, for the insurance companies will not cover any expences made by an accident!!! Your theory certificate is just not enough, the bike you are "renting" during your lessons is insured by the drivingschool. As bad as this may sound, perhaps it is better to go on with your lessons and sit this one out! I do not know if you are staying long in Holland, because if you are, you will get used to these kind of rules and restrictions, which are so typical Dutch!! And there will allways be another summer and even if the winter is not so bad, you can still ride!!! Perhaps you would like to take part in one of our BikeNet rides, I think there will place for you , if needs be as a duopassenger! I hope this will be of some help and forgive me my bad English!!! Love is in the " R"

Hi Seth, As far as I know (I've been working with a number of expats) a lot depends on how long you've been in the Netherlands. I think that for a certain amount of time your american licence should be OK, I think it's something like a year. However, easiest way to find out is simply contact the local copshop. Never put off till tomorrow what you can avoid altogether. Pilot Dit bericht is gewijzigd door Pilot op 09-08-2005 @ 18:21
